What is Color Analysis?

Quick answer: Color analysis (also called seasonal color analysis) is a method of determining which colors best complement your natural features by analyzing your skin undertone, hair color, and eye color. The modern 12-season system identifies your exact color season so you can build a wardrobe that makes you look and feel your best.

Color analysis — also called seasonal color analysis or color typing — is a method of determining which colors best complement your natural features. By analyzing your skin undertone, hair color, and eye color, you can discover your unique “color season” and build a wardrobe that makes you look and feel your best.

The History

The concept of seasonal color analysis dates back to the early 20th century, but it was popularized in the 1980s by Carole Jackson’s book Color Me Beautiful. The original system used four seasons (Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter), but modern color analysis has expanded to 12 sub-seasons for much more accurate results.

The 12-Season System

Each main season has three sub-seasons based on whether your coloring is primarily light, true/warm/cool, or bright/soft/deep:

  • Spring: Light Spring, True Spring, Bright Spring
  • Summer: Light Summer, True Summer, Soft Summer
  • Autumn: Soft Autumn, True Autumn, Deep Autumn
  • Winter: True Winter, Dark Winter, Bright Winter

How It Works

Professional color analysis uses a technique called “draping” — holding colored fabrics near your face to see how each shade interacts with your skin. The right colors make your skin look clearer, your eyes brighter, and your overall appearance more vibrant. The wrong colors can make you look tired, sallow, or washed out.

Why It Matters

Knowing your color season helps you:

  1. Shop smarter — Stop buying clothes that sit unworn in your closet
  2. Look more vibrant — The right colors enhance your natural beauty
  3. Save money — Build a cohesive wardrobe where everything works together
  4. Choose better makeup — Find foundation, lipstick, and eyeshadow shades that complement rather than clash
  5. Feel more confident — When you look good, you feel good
